Directions To The Water Stations Of The
"C&O Canal, Carderock Recreation Area - 20 Miles" Course

Getting by car to your station and to the start/finish (S/F) location

Use the following time allotments as a guideline to get to the station's location, setup the station and, as applicable, continue to the S/F station assuming you start at Reston Pkwy at the Dulles Access Rd:

• S/F station - 45 minutes
• 2nd station - 70 minutes
• 3rd station - 70 minutes

Use the following time allotments after the run's start as a guideline to clear the station:

• S/F station - 220 minutes
• 2nd station - 175 minutes
• 3rd station - 180 minutes

The start/finish station (S/F) is located along the C&O Canal trail at Carderock Park MD. It may be used 3 times (at ~0/10/20 miles).

1. Take Reston Pkwy south and turn left (east) on the Dulles Access Rd (Rt 267) towards the Beltway (Rt 495).
2. Take Rt 495 north towards MD. Cross the American Legion Memorial Bridge and take the first exit after the bridge to the Clara Barton Pkwy (CBP).
3. Turn left (west) on the CBP towards Carderock.
4. Go pass the Navy facility building (on the right), take the ramp exit and turn left to Carderock Park enter the parking lot and park north side opposite the restroom facilities.
5. The C&O trail is about 150 yards north of the parking lot. There is a trail from the parking lot to the C&O trail. Get some help and haul the coolers to the canal and place them on the south side (away from the canal) of the C&O trail.

The 2nd station is located at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center (Lock 19). It may be used 2 times (at miles ~4, 6 or other).

1. Follow steps 1) thru 3) of the directions to the start/finish station. You will be going west on the Clara Barton Pkwy (CBP) towards Carderock.
2. Continue on the CBP. Go passed the merge with MacArthur Blvd and passed Falls Rd (Rt 189) and proceed to the end of the CBP/Macarthur at the Tavern Visitor Center.
3. Park the car as close as possible to the trail leading to the C&O canal and place the coolers along the C&O trail.

1. Take the Clara Barton Pkwy east towards Rt 495.
2. Turn right (south) at the Carderock Park parking lot and park opposite the restroom facilities.

The 3rd station is located at C&O Canal at Lock 7. It may be used twice (at miles ~ 13.5, 16.5 or other).

1. Follow steps 1) thru 2) of the directions to the S/F station. You will be exiting Rt 495 at the Clara Barton Pkwy (CBP).
2. Turn right (east) on the CBP towards Glen Echo Park.
3. Proceed on the CBP to Lock 7. Park close to the C&O canal and place the coolers along the C&O trail.

1. Go west on the Clara Barton Pkwy towards Rt 495.
2. Cross Rt 495 and follows steps 4) & 5) of the directions to the start/finish station.
